Where To Shop For Silverware And Colored Glaze Near Your Beijing Hotel

By Cathryn Zhang

Colored Glaze Jewelry

Chinese Liuli, or "colored glaze," is a perfect integration of ancient culture and modern art. With more than two thousand years of history, Liuli is currently made using dewaxed casting and artificial crystals. The entire process may take up to 20 days for each figurine. Each one must be exquisite, bright and limpid.

Near the HeNan Hotel in Beijing, there is a shop on the first floor of Bai Gong Handicraft Museum named Bai Yi De Kun, where they offer high quality colored glaze artwork. I also found a large variety of pendants and colorful bracelets on display.

The shop assistant told me that Liuli is very durable and as hard as jade. The hottest item in the shop is a pendant named "Yuan Meng," which means "realizing one's dream." I liked its beautiful, translucent blue circular ring that matched a 14K white gold necklace. It was so mysterious and gorgeous, and that's why it was so popular.

The shop also offers some crafts fit for presents or souvenirs, such as a Peking Opera folding screen, each one of them a very good collection for your house.

Do you like fancy silverware?

If you like silverware, I recommend a little shop near the Beijing NingXia Hotel that has sterling silver flatware, silver accessories, and amber ware, all at very good prices. They even have some antiques mixed in with their modern designs!

Upon entering the shop, maybe you will find its products are similar to those at other shops at a glance. But upon closer examination you will notice the fine material and delicate craftsmanship from Nepal, India, and Tibet.

The most popular item is a classical silver ring featuring a 4mm square gem in the middle, with 2.5mm stones on the sides that alternate blue and clear. This polished sterling silver ring is priced at RMB 388.

You will find your favorite in things this shop, because the shop owner is from Nepal, and he speaks a little English, so he can give you good advice and background info on the things you want to buy.

Ideas for Decorating Your Breakfast Nook

By Malisa Holderbaum

The breakfast nook or kitchen is often among the most used rooms in a home. Because people gather there, you want the room to reflect your personality and be decorated in a way that will compliment the rest of your home. There are many ways to accomplish your decorating goals in the breakfast nook.

The selection of your furniture is not only about function, but also about decorating. Wood gives a much different feel than metal or glass. The biggest statement you can make in terms of decorating your kitchen is the choice of furniture style. Traditionally, wooden furniture and chairs will lend themselves better to country or traditional styles and metal or glass will work better in a modern kitchen.

Once you have selected the material, you can add several small touches to your kitchen furniture. These touches can help with a color pallet or decorating theme. Many times the seats or backs of chairs can be painted a particular color to match your cabinets or bring out a subdued color in your countertop. Tables often have tile borders that will match a backsplash in your kitchen. Tables can also be painted with designs and then sealed with a laminate to preserve the effort.

If you choose not to dress up your furniture with color or design then you can add that splash of color with cushions or placemats. Both benches and chairs can hold cushions of various colors or textures. Placemats can be for everyday specialty use. Everyday placemats will usually be a solid color or texture like the cushions. Specialty placemats can help decorate your kitchen for any holiday.

If you are thinking about selling your home then you might think about decorating your breakfast nook with china. Many people will set up china in their formal dining room to add a touch of color. China often compliments the colors in your counter tops or other kitchen decorations and putting place setting on the table is a nice way to dress up the room.

Breakfast nooks and eat-in kitchens typically have three walls full of windows and almost everyone has some kind of window treatment to protect their eyes from direct sunlight and glare. These window treatments, whether they be curtains or shades offer another decorating opportunity. In addition, the hardware from your curtains or shades will most likely be covered by a valence or cornice. The curved lines of the valence or cornice will be a nice contrast to the straight lines of the kitchen provided by cabinets and appliances.

Almost any room can benefit from lots of natural light. Sunlight will brighten a room and make it seem more cheerful. However, you cannot always rely on natural light. At night, you will need artificial light fixtures in your kitchen. The lighting options are quite varied. You can choose something that most people will not notice like recessed spotlights or you can hang a light fixture over the table. The style of that light fixture could make a major statement.

Many homeowners think that the lack of solid wall surfaces means that you cannot hang art in your breakfast nook. This is absolutely not true. The windows provide a large surface where many different types of art can hang. Arts and crafts stores sell decals that you can put on glass and paints that are meant to be painted on glass and that allow light to shine through. In addition, many people hang stained glass art projects with suction cups to windows in order to take advantage of the natural light source.

The interior designer has many ideas to work with when decorating your breakfast nook. The eat-in kitchen is the perfect example of how the things you use everyday can be as esthetically pleasing as they are functional.

Foolish: Part drama, part comedy, part performance film, total catastrophe. Tale hubs around a man who feels he is not utilizing his abilities wisely and tossing away his potential. Pearl Harbor: Part old-styled silver-monitor romance, part boys' venture, part enormous re-creation of December seven, 1941: a gigantic Hollywood film. Straight to Hell: "Self-indulgent" is an understated way of explaining this spaghetti Western spoof, written by cult controller Cox and costar Impolite. (86 minutes, 1987)

Saw: Two men are trapped in a room. Both men are chained to their half of the room. A story unfolds as these two people are given clues and information about the situation they are in and why. Can they solve the puzzle and get out alive?

Snuff Bottles: Cultured Products For Beijing's Shoppers

By Andy Lao

With their unique beauty and design, Chinese snuff bottles are admired by art fans the world over. What started as a convenient item for holding powdered tobacco later attracted generations of artists who decorated snuff bottles with some of the most exquisite, sophisticated Chinese artwork. Though incredibly small, snuff bottles have been in huge demand both in the past and today. Shoppers in Beijing have a unique opportunity to check out the elegant snuff bottles in the city's local shops.

Art lovers sometimes are at a loss of words to describe the beauty of snuff bottles. Famous bottles made in the past were usually made of some of the most precious materials - gold, jade, emeralds, pearl, or ivory - and adorned with the most expensive artwork, like cloisonne, paintings, calligraphy, or lacquer. Bottles originally made for the rich are even more beautiful and complex, since these bottles were used to symbolize their power and opulence.

Though a uniquely Chinese item, the snuff bottle was invented based on the snuff box used by the Europeans. It is believed that they were first made in the late Ming dynasty, right after Chinese began to smoke tobacco imported from the west. In the early Qing dynasty, it became very popular, as people started to use exquisitely made snuff bottles to show their status and taste in art.

Throughout the Qing dynasty, as the number of smokers grew and more and more people were fascinated by their artistic value, snuff bottles became increasingly popular. This was despite the fact that smoking tobacco was banned during this period. Even the Qing Emperors fell in love with snuff bottles. The snuff bottle in its current form - one with a tiny spoon attached under the stopper, was first produced by a workshop established inside the Forbidden City by the Emperor Daoguang. In the 1970s, artisans began to use modern techniques to make such bottles.

An especially interesting, unique class of snuff bottle is the "inside painted bottle." First made in the late Qing dynasty, such bottles quickly became a favorite among art collectors. It is usually made of glass and has a picture painted on the inside surface. Compared to pictures painted on the outside, pictures painted on the inside will not easily fade or come off after being used for a long time. Such bottles came to dominate the market starting in the 1970's. Bottles with traditional Chinese paintings or calligraphy done by famous artists are greatly prized.

Cultural Note: It is said "inside painted bottle" was invented in the late Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty. A low-ranking official went to Beijing on an assignment. He was one of a few good people who were disgusted by rampant corruption and were unwilling to give bribes under any circumstances. Because of this, he was ignored by the corrupted officials in the imperial court, who told him to wait indefinitely in the city.

The waiting was endless, and before long the official had used all his money. To survive, he had to move into a Buddhist temples and live with monks. He was a smoker and used a snuff bottle to smoke. One day when he tried to scrape out the last remaining tobacco powder in his bottle with a stick, a monk sitting next to him noticed something. The monk found that the scraping of stick inside the bottle could produce images on the surface. Later he used a sharpened stick dipped with ink to do the scraping, and the first "inside painted bottle" was created.

Chinese snuff bottles are made using a huge variety of materials. Usually there are six main types of snuff bottles made of six different materials: glass, porcelain, jade, amber, agate, and tourmaline. Bottles made of each of these materials have a unique look. Snuff bottle collectors usually have a large collection of bottles, all made of different materials and decorated with different types of artwork.

Shop for exquisite snuff bottles in the local shops when you are in Beijing, because they are too good to miss. Some great shops have bottles made by famous artisans in China. You can find a personal shopper to help you find the right places to go shopping.
