Where To Shop For Silverware And Colored Glaze Near Your Beijing Hotel

By Cathryn Zhang

Colored Glaze Jewelry

Chinese Liuli, or "colored glaze," is a perfect integration of ancient culture and modern art. With more than two thousand years of history, Liuli is currently made using dewaxed casting and artificial crystals. The entire process may take up to 20 days for each figurine. Each one must be exquisite, bright and limpid.

Near the HeNan Hotel in Beijing, there is a shop on the first floor of Bai Gong Handicraft Museum named Bai Yi De Kun, where they offer high quality colored glaze artwork. I also found a large variety of pendants and colorful bracelets on display.

The shop assistant told me that Liuli is very durable and as hard as jade. The hottest item in the shop is a pendant named "Yuan Meng," which means "realizing one's dream." I liked its beautiful, translucent blue circular ring that matched a 14K white gold necklace. It was so mysterious and gorgeous, and that's why it was so popular.

The shop also offers some crafts fit for presents or souvenirs, such as a Peking Opera folding screen, each one of them a very good collection for your house.

Do you like fancy silverware?

If you like silverware, I recommend a little shop near the Beijing NingXia Hotel that has sterling silver flatware, silver accessories, and amber ware, all at very good prices. They even have some antiques mixed in with their modern designs!

Upon entering the shop, maybe you will find its products are similar to those at other shops at a glance. But upon closer examination you will notice the fine material and delicate craftsmanship from Nepal, India, and Tibet.

The most popular item is a classical silver ring featuring a 4mm square gem in the middle, with 2.5mm stones on the sides that alternate blue and clear. This polished sterling silver ring is priced at RMB 388.

You will find your favorite in things this shop, because the shop owner is from Nepal, and he speaks a little English, so he can give you good advice and background info on the things you want to buy.

Ideas for Decorating Your Breakfast Nook

By Malisa Holderbaum

The breakfast nook or kitchen is often among the most used rooms in a home. Because people gather there, you want the room to reflect your personality and be decorated in a way that will compliment the rest of your home. There are many ways to accomplish your decorating goals in the breakfast nook.

The selection of your furniture is not only about function, but also about decorating. Wood gives a much different feel than metal or glass. The biggest statement you can make in terms of decorating your kitchen is the choice of furniture style. Traditionally, wooden furniture and chairs will lend themselves better to country or traditional styles and metal or glass will work better in a modern kitchen.

Once you have selected the material, you can add several small touches to your kitchen furniture. These touches can help with a color pallet or decorating theme. Many times the seats or backs of chairs can be painted a particular color to match your cabinets or bring out a subdued color in your countertop. Tables often have tile borders that will match a backsplash in your kitchen. Tables can also be painted with designs and then sealed with a laminate to preserve the effort.

If you choose not to dress up your furniture with color or design then you can add that splash of color with cushions or placemats. Both benches and chairs can hold cushions of various colors or textures. Placemats can be for everyday specialty use. Everyday placemats will usually be a solid color or texture like the cushions. Specialty placemats can help decorate your kitchen for any holiday.

If you are thinking about selling your home then you might think about decorating your breakfast nook with china. Many people will set up china in their formal dining room to add a touch of color. China often compliments the colors in your counter tops or other kitchen decorations and putting place setting on the table is a nice way to dress up the room.

Breakfast nooks and eat-in kitchens typically have three walls full of windows and almost everyone has some kind of window treatment to protect their eyes from direct sunlight and glare. These window treatments, whether they be curtains or shades offer another decorating opportunity. In addition, the hardware from your curtains or shades will most likely be covered by a valence or cornice. The curved lines of the valence or cornice will be a nice contrast to the straight lines of the kitchen provided by cabinets and appliances.

Almost any room can benefit from lots of natural light. Sunlight will brighten a room and make it seem more cheerful. However, you cannot always rely on natural light. At night, you will need artificial light fixtures in your kitchen. The lighting options are quite varied. You can choose something that most people will not notice like recessed spotlights or you can hang a light fixture over the table. The style of that light fixture could make a major statement.

Many homeowners think that the lack of solid wall surfaces means that you cannot hang art in your breakfast nook. This is absolutely not true. The windows provide a large surface where many different types of art can hang. Arts and crafts stores sell decals that you can put on glass and paints that are meant to be painted on glass and that allow light to shine through. In addition, many people hang stained glass art projects with suction cups to windows in order to take advantage of the natural light source.

The interior designer has many ideas to work with when decorating your breakfast nook. The eat-in kitchen is the perfect example of how the things you use everyday can be as esthetically pleasing as they are functional.

(86 minutes, 1987)

Saw: Two men are trapped in a room. Both men are chained to their half of the room. A story unfolds as these two people are given clues and information about the situation they are in and why. Can they solve the puzzle and get out alive?

Snuff Bottles: Cultured Products For Beijing's Shoppers

By Andy Lao

With their unique beauty and design, Chinese snuff bottles are admired by art fans the world over. What started as a convenient item for holding powdered tobacco later attracted generations of artists who decorated snuff bottles with some of the most exquisite, sophisticated Chinese artwork. Though incredibly small, snuff bottles have been in huge demand both in the past and today. Shoppers in Beijing have a unique opportunity to check out the elegant snuff bottles in the city's local shops.

Art lovers sometimes are at a loss of words to describe the beauty of snuff bottles. Famous bottles made in the past were usually made of some of the most precious materials - gold, jade, emeralds, pearl, or ivory - and adorned with the most expensive artwork, like cloisonne, paintings, calligraphy, or lacquer. Bottles originally made for the rich are even more beautiful and complex, since these bottles were used to symbolize their power and opulence.

Though a uniquely Chinese item, the snuff bottle was invented based on the snuff box used by the Europeans. It is believed that they were first made in the late Ming dynasty, right after Chinese began to smoke tobacco imported from the west. In the early Qing dynasty, it became very popular, as people started to use exquisitely made snuff bottles to show their status and taste in art.

Throughout the Qing dynasty, as the number of smokers grew and more and more people were fascinated by their artistic value, snuff bottles became increasingly popular. This was despite the fact that smoking tobacco was banned during this period. Even the Qing Emperors fell in love with snuff bottles. The snuff bottle in its current form - one with a tiny spoon attached under the stopper, was first produced by a workshop established inside the Forbidden City by the Emperor Daoguang. In the 1970s, artisans began to use modern techniques to make such bottles.

An especially interesting, unique class of snuff bottle is the "inside painted bottle." First made in the late Qing dynasty, such bottles quickly became a favorite among art collectors. It is usually made of glass and has a picture painted on the inside surface. Compared to pictures painted on the outside, pictures painted on the inside will not easily fade or come off after being used for a long time. Such bottles came to dominate the market starting in the 1970's. Bottles with traditional Chinese paintings or calligraphy done by famous artists are greatly prized.

Cultural Note: It is said "inside painted bottle" was invented in the late Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty. A low-ranking official went to Beijing on an assignment. He was one of a few good people who were disgusted by rampant corruption and were unwilling to give bribes under any circumstances. Because of this, he was ignored by the corrupted officials in the imperial court, who told him to wait indefinitely in the city.

The waiting was endless, and before long the official had used all his money. To survive, he had to move into a Buddhist temples and live with monks. He was a smoker and used a snuff bottle to smoke. One day when he tried to scrape out the last remaining tobacco powder in his bottle with a stick, a monk sitting next to him noticed something. The monk found that the scraping of stick inside the bottle could produce images on the surface. Later he used a sharpened stick dipped with ink to do the scraping, and the first "inside painted bottle" was created.

Chinese snuff bottles are made using a huge variety of materials. Usually there are six main types of snuff bottles made of six different materials: glass, porcelain, jade, amber, agate, and tourmaline. Bottles made of each of these materials have a unique look. Snuff bottle collectors usually have a large collection of bottles, all made of different materials and decorated with different types of artwork.

Shop for exquisite snuff bottles in the local shops when you are in Beijing, because they are too good to miss. Some great shops have bottles made by famous artisans in China. You can find a personal shopper to help you find the right places to go shopping.

How Do I Know Which Rock Tumbling Supplies To Buy?

By Richard Rockman

When beginning a new hobby, it is important to know where to start. The best place is to get to know what sort of equipment you will require. Hopefully, I can offer you a few tips on the correct rock tumbling supplies.

You need a tumbling machine. It rotates the barrels that we will discuss later. They come in all different sizes, so be sure to do a little research before purchasing your first one.

Barrels should be next on your list. These hold the rocks throughout the process. The one negative aspect of the barrels is that they need to be replaced at least once a year. Rocks are banging around in them for a very long time and the barrels are made of plastic!

Buy four barrels to start with. There are four basic steps in rock tumbling and you need a barrel for each one.

Now, we get down to the nitty gritty. Well, really just grit. Silicon carbide abrasive grit is used next. There are different sizes, but you will only need three to start with. Hardware, home improvement and rock or mineral stores are where to find this.

The three sizes you need are two hundred twenty, four hundred, and eighty. Just one tub of each grit will be plenty to get you started. Don't be afraid to ask a store employee for assistance if you are confused.

Now we have reached the point when you need cerium oxide polish. When the tumbling is done and all of those rough, sharp edges are removed, you need to put them into a fresh, clean barrel. Then you add the cerium oxide and some water. You know that part of the process when the stones appear to be shiny and a resemble glass? Well, this step is what makes that happen. Since you only need a tiny bit of polish for each batch, you can buy a very small container at first.

Okay, pellets are last. You must have round and plastic pellets. They protect the rocks from damaging each other while tumbling. They get tossed in at the beginning of the process and really help keep chipped rocks to a minimum.

So, there you have it. You are on your way to become a fantastic rock tumbler!

Dependable And Officially Permitted Downloading Of Online Movies

By Calvin Ferguson

The Internet has spawned a surplus of copyright violations due to the easiness of downloading and information passing. Music, movies and games are all most often sheltered by copyright and you could be putting yourself and your computer at risk for countless difficulties. For years the industries were opposed to to creating officially permitted processes to download this information. However, now you can get authorized downloads at a number of sites.

There are sites out there that permit you to download illegally copied copies of movies and games for free by using P2P file sharing services. Many individuals may deem that the possibility of being caught is improbable, though, it is foolish to even take the chance when there are officially authorized film download services on hand now that you can choose from.

For now there are numerous membership sites that proffer unlimited free film downloads that are wholly officially permitted. After you disburse the first membership charge you have access to loads of movies that you can download and they are without charge. The original membership fee pays for the percentage fees that are due to the copyright owner. The sites have special software that will analyze the amount of royalties that are due to the copyright owner.

These sites have a special license to offer the films obtainable for download. They have the license to offer the movie in return for a royalty fee paid back to the copyright holder.

These sites usually have a significant library of movies that can be downloaded for viewing or even streamed quickly to the server. Now and again they also submit software that will permit you to transfer the download to a DVD so that you can watch the motion picture from your Television set.

It can take some time to download a complete show to your computer. Your download speed is reliant upon your Internet connection and your processor. You can use a dial-up system but it will take much longer and you hazard disconnection, which will cause you to have to begin all over again. Regardless of the speed you may want to set it up to download when you are gone from your computer since it can take time.

But downloading can be the greatest way to get the movies that you want when you want them. Of course, there are no overdue fees and you essentially possess the film once you have downloaded it. You can watch it anytime and the technology is all the time improving.

Before deciding, make sure that you shop around at the various sites and see that they are permissible and they offer the advantages you want such as a great selection, virus safety for your computer and a satisfactory membership cost.

Why Should You Paint Your Car Yourself Instead of Paying Workshops

By Ulrich Fieldman

There are disadvantages and advantages with painting your car yourself and going to the workshop to paint.

Reasons to Paint Your Very Own Car.

One.Its a money saver or at least can be if you do it right of course. If you dont take the time to study to do it the right way then it can still be an expensive endeavor.

Two. its a great achievement to finished this task then be able to step back and look at the good job you've done.

Three. If you are into car restoration, its one way you could cut down your expenses.

4. Often there's preliminary work that you would have to do yourself before you get to the point of car painting itself.

Reasons To Paint Your Shop In A Car

One. It's most likely a time saver. Unless you have the additional time to spend car painting, then this would be the route you want to go. Do not forget theres more to it than just putting the paint on.

2. The shop more than likely has much better car painting tools then you will have. This signifies they could get a pretty finish.

3. Their paint may be better than yours

4. They know how to complete the essential body work first as they've professionals on staff specifically for that job.

Five. Reputable organizations will stand behind their work. Put differently they will give you various type of guarantee.

Six. They've the commercial products to clean the car prior to car painting, which is extremely fundamental.

7. They've the correct facilities, where as if you do it yourself you might not be able to protect the car against the elements in case you can't get it finished.

So as you can see there're good and bad points for both arguments. If you can improvise and create the same circumstances as for the favourable points of utilising a shop then you will want to consider it. Car painting is a tough undertaking. Another thing you will want to consider too is the value of the car. Say it is a 2nd motor vehicle or a pretty old one then maybe you don't want to pay the price of having it professionally painted. In this case you will probably be further ahead to do the car painting yourself. In these circumstances small flaws in the overall work is not going to make that much of a difference.

The other point is if youve whatsoever experience with car painting or even some other types of spray painting then you might be able to do a good job with out putting it into a shop. These're all things you'll need to consider. If you decide that you are going to do it yourself though it would be a better idea to read up several how to books or watch a video on the subject.

And I had about 2 months to practice! An important part of drum playing is relaxed breathing. A good warm-up, whether you are sitting or standing, is to take a slow, deep breath, filling the lungs with air.

Beginners, Intermediates, advanced, expert and professional players all use drumsticks. Most professional drummers are particular about the weight, shape, balance, size, grain and density of the sticks. Thick, heavy sticks are used to play street drums in marching bands and drum corps. They can produce a high quality sound.

Before you get started, be sure to do warm-up exercises for drum set playing. Generally speaking, drum set exercises would refer to rudiments or chops but the information that is being presented to you has to do with warming up the body before any drumming.

However, I love my guitar, and nothing could ever separate me from it. My guitar is my best friend, and thats how you should treat yours. Look after it, clean it daily, change the strings regularly, even if they still sound ok to you.

Before you get a teacher, remember that you are going to give this person your time and more importantly, your money. So make sure the teacher is a good one before you invest. Go online, see if you can find any write-ups on them, check the papers, ask around, talk to friends. But make sure the teacher is a good one and has a good reputation. Your teacher should be patient, understanding and above all else, professional!

Practice doing alternate up and down strokes slowly and smoothly using a metronome to keep time. For bluegrass picking use a heavy gauge pick but as with everything, you should try different ones out till you find what's right for you. You will see and hear that a lot of bluegrass guitar playing consists of the guitarist playing bass notes and strumming in between.

When you are choosing your repertoire, you can spread your net wide. No need to stick to the Top Forty, go for the Top One Hundred of whatever decade you feel comfortable with. An easy way out that does not need too much research is to just jot down a bunch of Beatles titles.

Just take a listen to the CDs and watch the videos featuring flatpickers like Norman Blake, Tony Rice, Dan Crary, Clarence White and Doc Watson. If you are new to the guitar as well as bluegrass music, you will find that you need to work on the use of your plectrum using up as well as down strokes.

Whimsical Artist: Animal Themed Paintings

By Charlotte Holder

When looking for wall hangings, I have found that artwork with an animal theme can be quite a delight to work with. I was asked by a friend to lend a hand in finding some artwork for walls of a new house she had purchased. After a surprising short discussion, we decided to search for several animal themed paintings since she was such an enormous animal lover.

Although most of her new furnishings are contemporary, the animal themed paintings we found bring a sense of fun and whimsy to the room. Once we found paintings that matched her color scheme, we found that the two styles complement each other extremely well.

Another friend was looking to replace a few of his existing artwork pieces as his updated the furnishing in his home. I ran across a fun piece featuring animals and children that I felt would make a nice addition. The painting struck such a chord with him that he decided to purchase a few more pieced by the same artist.

A decorator friend told me of a project she worked on which called for her to find several abstract paintings which gave off an animalistic aura. She was told by her client that she didnt want the more narrowly defined animal themed paintings. Each piece was indeed quite interesting and did give quite a unique animal feel.

Speaking of abstract, a fellow artist once told me that she was commissioned to produce an animal themed mural in the Cubist style. The resulting mural was quite unique and did indeed have a Picassoesque feel to it.

Not long ago, a friend graduated from Veterinary School and decided to open his own practice. He specifically wanted paintings and accessories that were animal themed that gave pet owners a sense of fun. Every room was filled with whimsical artwork and accessories that seemed to put most of his clients at ease.

Another friend speaks of a music teacher who teaches music and musical instruments to younger children. Her classroom is filled with paintings of animals playing different instruments. She is convinced these fun filled whimsical paintings gives the younger students a sense of confidence they would not otherwise feel when beginning to learn music.

Bottom line is I have seen animal themed paintings being used for almost every occasion and personality type. Paintings of any type of animal you can think of and even some of a more abstract nature. Animal themed paintings run the gamut of tastes and do not seem to lessen in appeal for those young or old who happened to be child-like at heart.

Spray Paint You Car in 6 Easy Steps - Why Not?

By Esti Edwards

With the failing economy and the falling wages of worker, perhaps the solution to giving your car a different look will be to give your car a complete new paint job. If the mechanics and the engine of the car is in good shape, but you do not fancy the car body, then painting it will be the ideal answer.

Its a fantastic money saver, but even more so if you do it yourself as opposed to having it professionally done up in the workshop. You can do it right if you study the basics and follow the instructions for car spray painting. It's important though if you decide you are going to take on this project that you are ready to see it complete till the end.

First of all, you require various supplies. These comprise of:

-coverings to protect the unpainted areas and masking tape to hold these in place -a good car-wash detergent and brush as well as a wax/grease remover. -several grits of sand-paper -primers and paint that's urethane base for the car spray painting -paint sprayer -safety equipment such as masks, goggles and protective clothing -knife and putty for fill ins.

One : You must make sure that you wash the car thoroughly to remove all grime and debris. If you don't then these things will be set in with your paint, leaving a very frustrating look to the completed job. Follow up with a wax/grease remover so the paint you use for the car spray painting would adhere the right way.

2 : Remove whatsoever rough spots by sanding. Once this has been done be certain to rinse off whatsoever of the loose sandings. This's where you will want to use the putty to fill in whatever minor pit marks, that are have been caused from stones for instance.

Three : Dont get in too much of a hurry to start your car spray painting. The car must be wholly dry so it is best to leave it to do so for a couple of hours. You can go ahead and cover whatever of the areas that your do not want to get paint on.

Four : Now you're ready to begin with the primer. Dont skip this step, as it'll give a much improved look to the finished project. It helps the paint to adhere the right way and allows for a more even finish. Next, once the primer is dry you'll need to gently sand it down.

5 : You are eventually at the step you have been waiting for. Its time to apply the color for your car spray painting. Whether you've chosen to use aerosol paints or a spray gun, the premise remains the same. Just apply thin coats. A few would probably be necessary. A Couple light coats are much better than one thick coat. You would be able to tell simply by looking at the car how many more coats of paint it'll require. Various will just require two where as a few others might require three or four.

6 : In conclusion, down to the last step and that's applying the clear coat. This's done exactly the same as the colored coats.

Now you can have a look at your personalized car spraying.

Every Good Scrapbook Page Layout Needs This

By Anne Bell

If you had to describe scrapbooks in just one word, chances are it would be "fun". Scrapbooking is undeniably a fun hobby; making a scrapbook is fun, they're fun to flip through and they're a perfect way to remember those fond memories. Scrapbooking is popular precisely because it's so fun - and this is a hobby which has an enduring appeal to people of every age and every lifestyle.

Aside from providing you with a fun and unique way of remembering events and significant details that took place in your life, scrapbooks are also one of the many tools in which you can express yourself. You don't need to be artistic to create your own scrapbook. However, there are some things that you should bear in mind when making a scrapbook to make it functional as well as exciting to look at. Number one on the list is the page layout.

As you very well know, the page layout of scrapbooks does not have to follow a certain format. If all of the pages of your scrapbook look the same, the whole thing will become boring to look at. However, what you should bear in mind is that each scrapbook page must contain certain things in order to make it interesting enough. These things must be arranged in no particular order but the rule of thumb is to include them in each page as much as possible. What are these? Read on and find out.

Margin: Scrapbooks need margins - these are the spaces you leave at the edge of each page to allow you to attach your pages to each other. Whether you plan to sew your pages together or attach them by another method, your margin is where this will be done.

Make sure to also leave a little margin along the edges so that pages can be easily turned without the risk of damaging any of your carefully placed decorations, photographs and text.

Paper Variety. Another thing is paper variety. With this, try to use a different paper for each page. The difference can be the paper's color, feel, or decorations.

Photos and/or illustrations: Scrapbooks are a very visually oriented medium, so photos are a must. If you don't have a photo to add to a page, consider using some clip art or drawing something in yourself. Images make your pages more interesting and fun to look through.

Captions: Captioning your photographs when you can is a good idea. It's fun to go back and read these captions later - and they can remind you just who was in that group photo as well as when and where the picture was taken.

Decorative accents: No scrapbook is truly complete without some purely decorative accents added. These should be on every page and can be almost anything you like: ribbons, paper cutouts, decorative borders, stickers, buttons, lace, painted elements, really anything.

Date: Include dates in your scrapbook - dates of photos, the date you made the page or the time in your life that a given page is about. In many ways, a scrapbook is like a diary; it contains memories of your life, so including a reference to time can make the pages of your book more interesting to go back and read next week or years from now.
