Everyone has their own opinion on great actors and great movies. No one is more right or more wrong because it is just an opinion nevertheless it is fun to have favorites and enjoy. Some actors have immense talent, and some actors are easy on the eyes and then there are the actors that are both. We admire some actors more for what they do off the screen than onscreen, as some of them are remarkable individuals who use their fame and fortune to help others and the world.

It's pretty remarkable to think that Tom Hanks started out on a little and kooky TV show called "Bosom Buddies". Who would have thought that he would have the talent to pull off such great roles as Andrew Beckett, a gay lawyer who is infected with AIDS, who is fired from his conservative law firm because of the fear that they may also contract the disease. He won his first Academy Award for that role in 1993 and it was well deserved.

His second Academy Award came just the next year making him only the second actor in history to win back-to-back Oscars with Spencer Tracy being the first back in 1937 and 1938. In 1994 Tom Hanks again took home the Oscar for his moving portrayal of Forrest Gump. He also has a list of other great movies but it is too long to cover here.

Brad Pitt has been recognized as a pretty boy since he first captivated us all in "Thelma and Louise" back in 1991. Nonetheless, Brad hasn't always played the pretty boy roles. Back in 1995 he played a couple of disturbing characters in both of the movies "Seven" and "Twelve Monkeys". While his private life sometimes seems to overshadow his movie roles the most impressive thing about Brad Pitt is his devotion to humanitarian causes throughout the globe. He has donated huge sums of cash to help many causes.

After Hurricane Katrina just about wiped out New Orleans, Brad Pitt started the "Make It Right Foundation" to aid in the redevelopment of the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans. The foundation builds homes that are reasonable, sustainable and true to the diverse culture of New Orleans. The goal was to achieve the building of the homes quickly so that the residents could return home as soon as possible. That has been his true achievement.

And that brings us to another great actor who is also known for his philanthropy. Paul Newman left us as he passed away this past year on September 26, 2008. During his life he entertained us with many great movies such as "Road to Perdition" in 2002, "The Color Of Money" in 1986, "Absence Of Malice" in 1981. He also played the leading role in the well known and much loved favorite "Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid" from clear back in 1969. Of course he played in a long number of other notable movies too.

Nevertheless we also remember him for his philanthropy. In 1982 he created a line of food products called "Newman's Own". It began with a salad dressing and then extended to include pasta sauce, lemonade, popcorn, cookies, salsa and more. He established a policy that all of the earnings generated from Newman's Own, after taxes of course, would be donated to charity. As of 2006, the company had donated in excess of $250 million.

Our favorite movies and favorite actors and actresses may vary from time to time. We may love them for their flair or for other reasons but now that we can download full length, high quality movies from the Internet instantaneously we don't have to miss any more of the movies that we want to see.

Balancing Modern and Traditional Arts and Crafts

Art can be done through countless mediums; there are the traditional ways like painting and sculpture, and there are the newer art forms like animation, which are enjoyed by kids of all ages. I firmly believe that both mediums are excellent ways to express artistic vision, and our children will develop creativity with a healthy dose of art in any form.

I'll first give a nod towards the more modern art forms. If you turn on your television set these days, there will be at least two networks that are dedicated to showing cartoons in both Western and Japanese forms. While this is all right, remember that not all shows are made with young kids in mind. Certain shows have mature themes, and some just have very bad artistry. Of course, these are all in one's tastes, so make sure you check what shows your kids are watching.

Exposing your child to a healthy dose of television is just a few clicks of the remote control away, but what about the more traditional of arts? Expose them to other creative endeavors; some crayons would already be appropriate for the younger ones. But as they start to get closer to their teenage years, introducing them to crafts would be a good idea.

Search for a craft show near you, and go there with your children. Observe what your child is interested in and encourage him or her to take it up as well. And that with enough practice, they'll be able to do it as well, if not better. Ask for tips from the craftspeople selling the piece. Chances are, they'll be happy to help budding artists.

A word of warning; make sure that you monitor your child's first few attempts at making crafts. As is always the case, their first attempt will not be as good as they'd want to; stay with them and urge them on. And if the craft in question involves potentially dangerous tools (like sharp knives for sculpting), always be around for the assist.
